The Chronicle of Coaching

Compiled and edited by Ruth Ann Harnisch, Christine Heinrichs, and Linda Ballew.

The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated weekly.

In this week’s Chronicle: This week the news includes business coaches working with executives who deal in real estate, medical devices, information technology, and the challenges of small business. In Canada, coaches are helping ease the transition for some of the millions of people who'll retire soon. A coach makes the news when she is arrested for serious abuses of her position, while another is fondly remembered for his enduring influence. And of course there's some love coaching for Valentine's Day.

From the Coaching Archives: Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock

New Age is a term applied by sociologists and the media to describe a diverse and eclectic cross section of the citizenry practicing diverse and eclectic lifestyles and disciplines. All New Age elements are age-old beliefs and practices, most of which were inspired by the great thinkers and philosophers of East and West antiquity.

Some of these elements include reincarnation (basic tenet of Hinduism and Buddhism), karma (a cosmic scorecard), soul mates (roots in Plato and akin to Carl Jung’s collective unconscious), astrology (Carl Jung’s archetypes of the collective unconscious), numerology (Pythagoras belief that reality could be reduced to numbers and mathematical principles) and mandala. (Hindu and Buddhist device to enhance meditation, pull yourself together and find focus) Many would debate the applicability of these to coaching, and yet the concepts behind them definitely have a place in the philosophical roots of coaching.
