The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated weekly. Compiled and edited by Ruth Ann Harnisch, Christine Heinrichs, and Linda Ballew.

In this week’s Chronicle:: Once again scandal tops the global coaching news, with teachers in Uganda jailed for charging to “coach” students on material they should have taught in class. From New Zealand, advice from a coach on how to manage a micromanaging boss. Two highly publicized suicides in Australia prompt sports coaches to learn about mental illness. The niche of maternity coaching surfaces in England and Scotland, as coaches help executives succeed as mothers and professionals. Businesses in Macedonia receive online coaching. In India, coaches help managers create socially responsible companies, and demand for academic coaches booms in helping people prepare for entrance exams.

In the U.S., business coaching helps senior executives look for new jobs, helps others cope with retirement, advises executives on becoming trustworthy, and a new book selects nuggets of advice from retirees.

Golfer Phil Mickelson has improved under the coaching of Butch Harmon, winning a tournament.

Nurse-coaches support cancer patients in a new program. There’s Christian coaching, a free teleseminar for work-at-home moms, ten ways to improve your environment and ten favorite self-improvement books. One blogger summarizes two approaches to coaching. Another blogging coach explains why he turns down requests for free coaching.

And as always, if we missed anything, let us know at info@thefoundationofcoaching.org

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock

The roots of coaching from the decade of the 1940s are slim, with Fritz Perls coining the term “Gestalt Therapy”. In the 1950s Carl Rogers’ presented client-centered therapy and Abraham Maslow created his hierarchy of needs. In the 1950s personal success literature continued to be published with Earl Nightingale’s “The Strangest Secret,” Norman Vincent Peale’s “Power of Positive Thinking,” Joseph Campbell’s “A Hero with a Thousand Faces,” and L. Ron Hubbards’s “Scientology.” Some of these publications are not without controversy to this day. Transcendental meditation appeared during this time as well, as executive counseling books and R.H.R. International counseling executives hired industrial psychologists.
