The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated weekly. Compiled and edited by Linda Ballew and Ruth Ann Harnisch.

In this week’s Chronicle: In the news, the death of Pakistan’s World Cup cricket coach earlier this year triggered a worldwide murder investigation. After claiming the cause of death was manual strangulation and interviewing dozens of players and others, police now say the death was due to natural causes. Items this week include the cost-effectiveness of coaching newly-hired business executives, career coaching for young professionals just starting out, and the lifelong advantages of receiving coaching as a teen or young adult.

A leadership coach admits not every client is “coachable,” while some clients get the courage to go forward by looking backward. Meet a CEO who views coaching as his major job responsibility; learn how to work with a new, younger boss, how to get along with difficult people, and how to resolve disagreements. A family management coach organizes households, and dating coaches help singles shed their “dork-ness.”

In the blogs: Live life on purpose, test your life satisfaction, find lists of useful resources, and make your wishes come true in just 100 steps. (their promise, not ours) One business coach offers his opinion on the different ways men and women approach business, another business coach decides most decisions are instinctive. Finally in the blogs, a “blogging coach.” (It had to happen.)

Publicity seekers include coaching webcasts, online radio that mixes music with motivation, a new executive coach training program at a university, and a program to measure your fiscal fitness.

The Chronicle of Coaching strives for 100% accuracy and regrets any deviation from that standard. Our policy is to correct errors promptly and prominently, in the next edition and in the online archive. Please tell us immediately if you see something wrong.

And as always, if we missed anything, let us know at info@thefoundationofcoaching.org

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock

The roots of coaching from the decade of 1960s include the founding of Esalen in California to explore human potential and Findhorn in the UK to explore spirituality. This was the period of the counterculture and the Beatles, whose music brought Eastern philosophy to the masses. The New Age Movement melded spiritual traditions and alternative medicine from the East and West.

Linda Goodman published her astrology books and Weight Watchers was founded. This decade ushered in an expansion of human consciousness and community. Personal success literature published during this period included Maxwell Maltz’s “Cybernetics,” Jose Silva’s “Silva Mind Control,” Thomas Harris’s “I’m OK, You’re OK,” and John Gardner’s “Self Renewal.”

The first large group awareness training called “Mind Dynamics” was launched by Alexander Everett. Next week we will look at the roots of business coaching from the decade of the 1960s.
