The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated weekly. Compiled and edited by Linda Ballew and Ruth Ann Harnisch.

In this week’s Chronicle: A recurring theme over the past year is the need to coach and mentor young talent in business - it's a leadership gap being recognized worldwide. Another recurring theme: is coaching a good investment for business? A new study of executives reveals while most plan to continue or add coaching, many are cutting back and questioning its effectiveness.

Coaches receiving press this week include two who describe themselves as wealth coaches, and a coach who tries to find his sensitive side in a military training camp. Catch up with volunteers who got coaching to help with their New Year's resolutions. Coaching helps realtors in a slump, as well as independent financial advisors overshadowed by large national firms, and anyone who needs to learn the "elevator speech" method of marketing.

This week's featured commentators include a marketing coach who believes everyone is a champion, a blogger who says he can give you a quick start to achieve anything, coaches for lawyers, speechmakers, and for stay-at-home moms who think they might want to be coaches. And if that's enough to give you a headache, another coach offers a "hands-on" cure.

New coaching books teach strategies for success, public speaking to hostile audiences, and overcoming workaholic patterns, and a book offering coaching to politicians in the hope of developing more effective world leaders.

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock

By the mid-1980's Fred Kiel sold out of his clinical psychology practice and started KRW International focusing on working with senior executives in Fortune 500 companies as a "coach." He used the metaphor about helping clients go from winning the silver medal to becoming gold medal winners, and compared himself to a coach of Olympic athletes and compared his clients to Olympic athletes.

In 1993, Fortune Magazine did a cover story called "The Executive's New Coach" and Fred's firm KRW International was one the only firm highlighted in the article, which also featured three individuals. It was an early mention of an "Executive Coach" in a key business publication.
