The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated each Wednesday at noon EDT. Compiled and edited by Linda Ballew and Ruth Ann Harnisch.
In this week’s Chronicle: A state legislature considers an urgent request to fund coaching services that have been proven to cut crime. Over two dozen coaching professionals from eight countries meet in New York City to discuss the future of coaching around the world. More publicity for the “My Life Coach” video game, explanations of what coaching is and is not, attention for coaching programs that target college students, parents, executives, women, with datelines from Canada to the U.K., from Texas to Tennessee. And finally, a former teen star from the old American television classic “Happy Days” tries to get his life together with help from a life coach.

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock
Mind Dynamics was the first large group awareness training (LGAT). It was started in Texas in 1962 by Alexander Everett, and moved its headquarters to California in 1970. According to Stewart Emery, it was a form of meditation, designed to help practitioners get their brainwaves to the alpha, or relaxed, state. Mind Dynamics employed seminar leaders who went on to found companies that became icons in the personal growth industry. Some of the seminar leaders were Werner Erhard, (founded Erhard Seminar Training, better known as “est,” in 1971),Stewart Emery (founded Actualizations in 1975), and John Hanley, Charlene Afremow, Randy Ravelle and Bob White (co-founded Lifespring in 1974).
