The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated each Wednesday at noon EDT. Compiled and edited by Linda Ballew and Ruth Ann Harnisch.
In this week’s Chronicle: In the U.S., the CBS Television Network’s Sunday Morning’s “Cover Story” offered proof that coaching has gained a remarkable foothold in almost every aspect of American culture. The death of one of the USA’s most honored sports coaches made news as well. The ever-growing field of health coaching raises questions about patient rights, including privacy and freedom from nagging. A bill in the U.S. Senate would provide government funding of business coaching for entrepreneurs. Coaches teach how to brand yourself and your businesses, how to excel on college entrance exams, build a home-based business, lead an authentic life, and much more. As always, if we missed anything, please let us know at info@thefoundationofcoaching.org

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching

Australian Stewart Emery came to the United States in 1971 to work for Mind Dynamics as a seminar leader. He became the first president and CEO of est (Erhard Seminar Training). According to Stewart, the foundational idea of est was personal responsibility. That message found an audience in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when so many people were blaming “the establishment” for whatever wasn’t working for them. Emery co-founded Actualizations, an international learning and development organization, in 1975. In 1980 he published “Actualizations: You Don't Have to Rehearse To Be Yourself.”
