The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, and is updated each Wednesday at noon EDT. Compiled and edited by Linda Ballew and Ruth Ann Harnisch.

In this week’s Chronicle: The water cooler topic of the week all across the country was the unusual story of Senator Larry Craig – did somebody say the Republican Party needs a coach? And people are talking about the suicide attempt of popular actor Owen Wilson – that includes coaches. We include a blogger’s comments on depression. The Center for Disease Control, one of the most important public health institutions in the US, tries coaching high-risk clients by cell phone calls and daily text messages. There are more possibilities for a phone-coaching program we told you about in a previous edition of the Chronicle - it gathers behavioral information from what you say and then whispers coaching tips into your earpiece. Are you a good match for your job? A coaching program offers a diagnosis and cure. A radio show seeks coaching clients for live sessions, coaching franchises seek expansion, and a former Hollywood writer helps women seeking a meaningful life after retirement. Bloggers urge us to rethink the Labor Day holiday, disconnect from electronics and reconnect in person, or link in to 100 business podcasts to hone your business skills. As always, if we missed anything, please let us know at info@thefoundationofcoaching.org

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock

A key influence of the spread of coaching globally was the Coach U program, which in 1997 offered scholarships to the first five international students from each country who applied and were accepted. Several other training programs helped open international markets and influenced the geographic spread of coaching, and multi-national companies brought in coaching as part of their corporate culture. Coach U licensed materials in 1997 to Japan, in 1998 to Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, in 2002 to Italy, and to Korea in 2003. The Coach Training Institute trained coaches in the United Kingdom in 1999, in Japan in 2000 and in Norway in 2001. Results Coaching trained coaches in the United States in 2001, United Kingdom and Singapore in 2002 and South Africa in 2004. Other training companies such as New Ventures West, B-Coach, ILCT and Newfield Network have coaches and deliver trainings in global markets.
