The Chronicle Of Coaching
The Chronicle of Coaching provides a snapshot of what’s happening in the coaching profession, designed to show where and how coaching appears in the popular culture worldwide. It is not intended to be a summary service nor a news roundup, although it may serve that purpose for some readers. The Chronicle is new each Thursday morning. Compiled and edited by Alex Goldsmith, Linda Ballew and Ruth Ann Harnisch.
In this week’s Chronicle: Executive coaching is the best tool for training financial professionals to become leaders in their organizations, says a worldwide accountancy organization. A company that provides coaching services for students shows up in two items this week, adding to the number of mentions we’ve noted this year. The niche of “family coaching” receives more media attention, this time from the Wall Street Journal. The Chronicle notes when coaching makes inroads in the culture, and this week we see the subject of coaching on the program at a major conference for executives whose companies provide elder care. With “The Secret” still on best-seller lists, a blogger takes issue with relying on the popular “Law of Attraction” for success. A writing coach gives tips for business writers, a performance coach lists eleven “superfoods,” and a business coach gives a checklist for moving ahead. Check out the article on Ten Home-Based Businesses – coaching comes after dog-sitting.

Historical facts from the evolution of coaching
By Vikki G. Brock
Coaching service providers emerged before coach education and coach training organizations. For example, from the psychology perspective, in the 1950s RHR International was providing counseling to executives. In 1981 Personnel Decisions International (PDI) began offering executive coaching services. In 1987, KRW International was founded by Fred Kiel, among others, to “help senior people change by empowering and bringing them data.” David Peterson, from PDI, says much of the early work was “helping people be less abrasive and deal with some of the same things we provide coaching on today.” PDI also launched a significant research project on coaching in 1987 that tracked the progress of 370 coaching participants with the intent of creating a thorough picture of their coaching process.
